    NEW DELHI, India (AP) - The mother of Guru Maharaj Ji, the
17-year-old Indian religious leader now living in the United States
with an American wife, renounced her son Tuesday and accused him of
being a playboy instead of a holy man.
    In a signed statement, his mother declared she was removing her son
as spiritual leader of the Divine Light Mission and no longer
recognized him as the ''perfect master,'' as he is known to his
followers.
    Known as Shri Mataji, or holy mother, she said her son, ''under the
instigation of certain bad elements in the United States Divine Light
Mission, has continuously disrespected my will by adopting a
despicable, nonspiritual way of life.''
    Susan Butcher, a 30-year-old Canadian devotee of the Divine Light
Movement, said the Guru's relatives in India were upset with the way
Maharaj Ji was living in the United States.
    ''He has not been practicing what he has been preaching,'' said Miss
Butcher, who became a devotee of the Guru when he visited Toronto in
1971. Speaking in behalf of the Guru's mother, Miss Butcher said,
''He has always preached and recommended his devotees to live a life
of vegetarianism, celibacy and abstaining from alcohol and all
excessive forms of materialism. Now he himself is indulging and
encourging his devotees to eat meat, to get married and have sexual
relations and to drink. He's not living a spiritual life. He's being a
playboy.''
    Miss Butcher said she thought many of the guru's devotees, which
number eight milion in India, would still remain faithful to the
Divine Light teachings, although they would not recognize him as their
leader.
    The Divine Light Mission was founded in 1961 by the guru's father,
who died in 1966. After his death, his widow proclaimed her youngest
son to be the next head of the movement while she remained its patron.
    The guru was last in India in June 1973 when he posted a $13,000
bond with Indian authorities. He had become embroiled in a customs
case involving several hundred thousand dollars worth of jewelry,
other valuables, foreign currency and travelers checks seized from
disciples who traveled with him.
    C. L. Tandon, general secretary of the Divine Light Mission in
India, claimed the guru had ''shown disrespect to his mother by
removing her pictures from the American Divine Light missions, saying
she is not worthy of worship but that his wife is.''
    The guru married his American secretary last May. They had their
first child, a daughter named Prem Lata, meaning Vine of Love, last
month.
    The American Divine Light Mission is headquartered in Denver, Colo.,
but the guru and his 26-year-old wife were last reported living in a
mansion in Malibu, Calif.

    A spokesman for the Divine Light Mission in Denver said the guru was
en route to India for an April 13 festival at Lucknow, India.
    ''It is ridiculous,'' said Joe Anctil, press secretary to the guru,
of his mother's statement that he was being removed as spiritual
leader of the religious movement, which claims 50,000 followers in the
United States.
    The guru took over management of the missions in December 1973, on
his 16th birthday because his mother ''had mismanaged the mission
which caused us to be in debt at the time,'' Anctil said.
    On the charge of being a playboy instead of a holy man, Anctil said
Maharaj Ji ''is not following any traditions or Indian concepts as
such. Maharaj Ji has no teachings and no philosophies.''
    ''In Knowledge sessions, he reveals a meditation which is a
practical experience. Anyone can choose a life style and do what he
wants. Maharaj Ji does not say what to eat, drink or smoke. He wants
to change the hearts of men and not their habits,'' Anctil said.
    When the guru's mother was in the United States ''she lived exactly
the life style'' of her son, Anctil said.
    The guru's mother was in the United States a few months ago, Anctil
said, and attempted to gain control of the American mission, but
''was unsuccessful and went back to India where she gathered 20 to 30
followers and claims that as the mission.''
    Miss Butcher was director of the mission in Canada before being
fired by the guru, Anctil said, for ''mismanagement of the Canadian
mission.''
    The guru left Miami Tuesday morning by plane, Anctil said, but might
be traveling to India by other transportation.
    The guru had been in Miami for a meeting of his mission directors
from several countries. ''His devotees are behind him 100 per cent. I
can say Maharaj Ji is the spiritual leader of the Divine Light

    LOS ANGELES (AP)-''Star Trek'' flies again!
    The joyous news is passing along from one ''Star Trek'' freak to
another, and there are thousands.
    No television series has ever attracted the fanatical following as
the saga of the intrepid crew of the USS Enterprise.
    Largely as a result of the continuing cult, Paramount has announced
that it will produce a feature-length version of ''Star Trek.''
    It will feature as many of the original cast as are willing to
return, plus ''10 international celebrities for cameo roles.''
    All this is very gratifying to Gene Roddenberry who will write and
produce the feature. ''Star Trek'' is his baby.
    ''I just got back from a meeting with students at LSU (Louisiana
State University),'' he reported. ''I like to get out to universities
at least once a year to find out what they're thinking.
    ''This time they planned a meeting for 1,100 students. Euht
thousand showed up, and the program had to be switched to the
basketball stadium.''
    Star Trekkers are like that. Each year sees dozens of conventions
among devotees of the series. There are two annually in New York,
drawing more than 17,000 people, Roddenberry says.
    ''Star Trek'' publications abound, and there are t-shirts, posters,
bumper stickers and other forms of merchandise.
    All this continues to amaze and delight the man who started the
whole thing. Gene Roddenberry says he is ''not a guru, and I don't
have space-admiral ensignia on my pajamas. I'm just an ordinary guy
who likes to sail and play golf.
    ''But when I attend one of the 'StarTrek' conventions, I'm treated
like some kind of oracle. It's a little too much to take, and I try
to limit myself to one convention a year.''
    Until 1966, Roddenberry was a journeyman script writer in the
television mill, turning out scripts for ''Playhouse 90,'' ''Have Gun,
Will Travel,'' etc.
    ''I was head writer for 'Have Gun,' and that was fun to do - it was
a kind of fantasy,'' he recalled. ''I also liked 'Naked City.'

    HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) - Band leader Lyle C. ''Skitch'' Henderson has
surrendered at a federal prison camp to begin a six-month term for
filing false income tax returns.
    Henderson, 57, will serve the term at the minimum security Allenwood
federal penitentiary in central Pennsylvania.
    Henderson, whose band played for several years on NBC-TV's
''Tonight'' show, was convicted in December of putting an inflated
$350,000 income tax value on a collection of musical scores and
arrangements donated to the University of Wisconsin.
    The scores were ''almost worthless,'' said the federal judge who
sentenced Henderson to the prison term and fined him $10,000.
    Henderson surrendered on Tuesday.

    DENVER (AP) - The Guru Maharaj Ji has gone to India in an effort to
oust his mother and elder brother from leadership posts in the Divine
Light Mission.
    The 17-year-old guru arrived in India on Monday and planned ''a
confrontation'' with his mother, Mataji, the guru's news secretary Joe
Anctil said on Tuesday.
    Mother and son have been at odds in recent weeks in a power struggle
over leadership of the religious organization, which is headquartered
here. The Divine Light Mission claims a membership of six million.
    Last week, Mataji said she would remove her son as the ''Perfect
Master'' and head of the mission because he had become a playboy
instead of a holy man.

    FT. GORDON, Ga. (AP) - Plans are being made to transfer Mamie
Eisenhower to Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington.
    The former First Lady was admitted to the U.S. Army Medical Center
on March 25 where she was treated for intestinal bleeding, later
diagnosed as diverticulosis. 
    An Army spokesman said Tuesday that Mrs. Eisenhower has shown steady
improvement and her condition is ''exceptionally good.''
    The tentative date for her transfer to Walter Reed is April 14.

    NEW DELHI, India (AP) - Shri Mataji, the Holy Mother of the Divine
Light Mission, says she has named her oldest son to replace his
brother Maharaj Ji as guru of the movement because her youngest son
became a playboy after he moved to the United Sates.
    ''Whatever a mother does, she does for the good of the child,'' said
the widow of the founder of the movement. ''Once he has fallen from
his high pedestal because of his own misdeeds, he cannot deserve any
more to be respected because he has broken the discipline and ideals
that behoove a guru. But I will accept him as a son any time.''
    Bal Bhagwan Ji, 24, is her choice for the new leader of the
movement, which claims more than 8 million devotees, most of them in
India. Maharaj Ji, the youngest of four brothers, is now 17 and has
been the guru of the movement since his mother blessed him as a
Perfect Master after the death of her husband in 1966.
    Shri Mataji in a statement last week accused Maharaj Ji of adopting
''a despicable, nonspiritual way of life'' while living for the past
two years in the United States. His headquarters in Denver, Colo.,
says he returnd to India this week to oust his mother and oldest
brother from the Mission, but he has not surfaced yet.
    There is speculation the youth may be trying to assess his strength
in India before making a move. A test could come this weekend, when
separate festivals have been announced for the rival gurus to
celebrate the Hindu spring harvest holiday.
    The Denver headquarters said Maharaj Ji would hold his in Lucknow,
in northern India. Shri Mataji and Bhagwan Ji plan their celebration
at Hardwar, in the Himalayan foothills on the banks of the sacred
Ganges.
    Interviewed today in the Mission's headquarters in New Delhi with
her new guru sitting beside her, the 49-year-old mother blamed the
downfall of her youngest on a handful of American associates,
including his 26-year-old secretary, whom he married last year.
    ''They have spoiled him,'' she said, speaking in Hindi. ''These
people, because of getting so many donations, have corrupted
themselves and Maharaj Ji.
    ''They are using him like a hen that lays golden eggs, as a tool to
get more and more money and gifts for a few American followers who
are living in a high style.''
    She said she opposed Maharaj Ji's marriage and did not give her
permission, but ''Maharaj Ji and his friends got permission for the
marriage from an American court on the excuse that I was in India and
was sick. At that time I was not sick, and the court should have got
my approval and waited for it.
    ''I was not happy with the marriage because it was in no way an
ideal marriage befitting Guru Maharaj Ji. But even then, believing
that one spirit prevails over all of us, I ultimately accepted the
marriage although it was done without my consent and illegally.''

    SAIGON, South Vietnam (AP) - South Vietnamese troops withstood a
third day of assaults against Xuan Loc, a provincial capital 40 miles
east of Saigon, today and battled attacks on two district capitals 20
to 30 miles southwest of Saigon, the government reported. The Viet
Cong claimed the Communists had gained control of the market, the
provincial headquarters, an engineering base and the eastern part of
the airfield at Xuan Loc, but the Saigon command claimed the invaders
had been driven out. It said the North Vietnamese and Viet Cong were
attacking today on the eastern and southeastern edges of the city.

    PHNOM PENH, Cambodia (AP) - Government ground forces and planes
using advanced American fire bombs halted a 200-man Khmer Rouge force
that battled to within two miles of Phnom Penh's airport, reports
from the area said. The Cambodian command was reported trying to
organize a counterattack. The command claimed artillery bombardment
and the air force's rain of CBU55 fire bombs killed 700 insurgents 7
to 12 miles northwest of the city. Although such claims are always
suspect, a Westernreporter in the field said the government T28's
''caught 'em in the open.''

   THAT WAS THE RHETORICAL STYLE USED BY SCOTT AT HIY NEWS
CONFERENCE, WHERE HE DENOUNCED THE FBI FOR WHAT HE TERMED ITS
HARASSMENT OF HIS FATHER DURING THE PAST MONTH. SUCH
SOLICITUDE FOR HIS FATHER'S HEALTH MIGHT RING MORE TRUE,
HOWEVER, IF SOME EXPLANATION WERE OFFERED AS TO WHY, CONCERNED
AS HE WAS, JACK SCOTT HADN'T EMERGED EARLIER TO SPARE THE
ELDER SCOTT HIS ORDEAL.
   JACK SCOTT GAVE NO SUCH EXPLANATION. FOR THAT MATTER, THE

   ''HE RAN THE ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT LIKE A DICTATOR,'' DAVE
ANDERSON QUOTED ONE OF SCOTT'S FORMER COLLEAGUES. ''I WAS
ALL FOR HIM WHEN HE ARRIVED AT OBERLIM BUT IF YOU
DISAGREED WITH HIM AT ANY POINT ALONG THE LINE, YOU WERE
IMMEDIATELY CLASSIFIED AS 'ONE OF THEM,' ONE OF THE
ENEMY.''
   ADNERSON NOTED THAT HIS OBERLIN COLLEAGUE REFUSED TO LET HIS
NAME BE USED FOR FEAR OF REPRISAL. THIS TELLS US MORE ABOUT
THE TRUE NATURE OF BILL WALTON'S NEW POLITICAL MENTOR THAN A

BELIEVER. THE FORMER UCLA STAR THUS FOLLOWS ALONG THE TRAIL
BLAZED BY SOME LESSER-KNOWN FIGURES WHO SAW JACK SCOTT
AS THE LEADER OF A MOVEMENT TO ''LIBERATE'' ATHLETICS FROM WHAT

   SCOTT'S IDEA WAS TO BRING THE ATHLETES TO THE ANTI-WAR
RALLIES. HE WANTED THEM ''SOCIALLY AWARE AND CONCERNED'';
ENOUGH SO TO TAKE SUCH ''REVOLUTIONARY'' ACTIONS TO
DEMOCRATIZE THE SPORTS STRUCTURE AS, FOR EXAMPLE,
SIGNING A PROPAGANDA PETITION THAT CONDEMNED THE U.S.
PRESENCE IN SOUTHEAST ASIA. THIS WAS SCOTT'S PRIMARY
BEHIND-THE-SCENES CONTRIBUTION TO THE UNIVERSITY OF
CALIFORNIA'S ATHLETIC PROGRAM WHE HE SERVED ON THE
FACULTY AT BERKELEY.
   SCOTT WAS PROUD OF THAT PETITION. AS HE WROTE, IT STRUCK ''A
BLOW AT THE STEREOTYPE OF THE DUMB, CREWCUT, MUMBLING
JOCK.'' WITH THAT CRITERION IN MIND, THE MASTER MUST REGARD
HIS LATEST ACQUISITION AS A PRIZE PUPILE. FOR, WATCHING BILL

    NEW DELHI, India (AP) - Maharaj Ji, the 17-year-old guru disowned by
his mother because she said he became a playboy in the United States,
flew into the northern city of Lucknow on Saturday in an attempt to
reassert his control over Indian devotees.
    United News of India reported that the guru arrived under tight
security, accompanied by his 26-year-old American wife, one-month-old
daughter and several disciples from his Divine Light Mission's
headquarters in Denver, Colo.
    The Denver office had earlier reported that the guru came to India
six days ago, but there was no confirmation until he showed up in
Lucknow, flying from Bombay via Calcutta.
    From the airport, he and his retinue went to a secret hideaway to
await the guru's scheduled appearance Sunday evening at a festival
organized by his followers in an open park in central Lucknow.
    While the guru delivers his spiritual discourse, his mother, Mataji,
is due to lead a rival festival 300 miles away at Hardwar in the
Himalayan foothills.
    With Mataji will be Maharaj Ji's eldest brother, 24-year-old Bal
Bhagwan Ji, whom the matriarch of the Divine Light Mission has blessed
as the new guru of the movement founded by her late husband in 1961.
    The 49-year-old mother, who had been unhappy with Maharaj Ji's
marriage to his former secretary, Marolyn Johnson of San Diego,
renounced her youngest son last week and said she would no longer
recognize him as head of the Divine Light Mission. She accused him of
leading ''a despicable, nonspiritual way of life'' in the United
States the past two years.
    Maharaj Ji has not replied to the charges publicly, but his
spokesmen have described them as ''ridiculous.''
    In an interview Friday, Bal Bhagwan Ji and his mother said they
would accept Maharaj Ji back into their family if he asked for their
forgiveness but that they would never again recognize him as a guru
and ''perfect master.''
    Mataji claims that nearly all the eight million devotees of the
Divine Light Mission in India support her. The movement estimates
there are about 500,000 followers in the United States and smaller
numbers in Europe.

    LUCKNOW, India (AP) - The 17-year-old Guru Maharaj Ji said Sunday he
is still a ''perfect master'' worthy of worship by his devotees even
if his mother thinks he is a playboy in the United States.
    But he backed off from a personal confrontation with his mother, and
police barred him from addressing thousands of Indian devotees who
had come to this northern city for the Maharaj Ji's first visit to his
homeland in two years.
    Wanting to avoid a possible riot, local authorities withdrew
permission for the guru's Divine Light Mission to hold a planned
festival that was to become a test of strength between his supporters
and those of his mother, Mataji.
    At one stage, a senior Lucknow magistrate responsible for law and
order in this city of one million announced that Maharaj Ji had left
for an unknown destination with his retinue of about 10 persons,
including his 26-year-old American wife, the former Marolyn Johnson of
San Diego, and their month-old daughter.
    But Maharaj Ji surfaced in the evening, to hold a news conference on
the lawn of a luxury hotel - his first meeting with the press since
his mother renounced him two weeks ago and accused him of leading ''a
despicable, nonspiritual way of life in the United States.''
    While Maharaj Ji was in Lucknow, his mother was reported 300 miles
away at Hardwar in the Himalayan foothills, formally installing her
eldest son, 24-year-old Bal Bhagwan Ji, as the new recognized leader
of the spiritual movement founded by her late husband in 1961.
    ''It is funny and ridiculous to say they have removed me from office
as if it is a public office to which I was elected or appointed,''
Maharaj Ji said. ''Nobody creates a guru. He is self existent. Nobody
can make a guru except the Guru Maharaj Ji himself.''
    However, he declined to answer his mother's charges that he had
started drinking alcoholic beverages, had begun eating meat instead of
remaining a vegetarian, and had shown too much interest in sex.
    The guru, who flew into Lucknow on Saturday after a journey from the
United States, showed visible dismay when he talked about his mother.
    ''Mothering means caring and loving,'' he said. ''If my mother
denies that to me, then my goal becomes supreme and takes over.
    ''I am not leaving my job. These accusations have not changed me.
These will result in only further perfecting of the perfect master.
    The guru said he planned to return to the United States soon without
going to see his mother. The Divine Light Mission, which has its U.S.
headquarters at Denver, Colo., claims 500,000 American followers and
eight million in India.
    ''But I will come back again and again to India and many other
countries to spread my message,'' Maharaj Ji said. ''This time I came
to set right wrong notions, ideas and feelings among my devotees. My
duty is to save people and to spread happiness and peace.''
    One senior police official said after the news conference: ''We will
be happiest if Guru Maharaj Ji just leaves Lucknow.''
